Those of you who watched the Michael Jackson tribute performed by his sister Janet Jackson and several other world-renowned choreographers were most likely blown away. Some of you may wonder how much work goes into 4 minutes of energy packed dance moves and synchronization? Well MTV did a 20 mini-documentary of what went on behind-the-scenes. The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards was a story of GREAT music, off-the-wire performances and some of THE weirdest mishaps live TV has seen since the Super Bowl when Janets boob popped out. – S
There were EXCELLENT moments last night and there were horrible; we shall refrain from going into detail with what THAT artist did to another during an acceptance speech. This blog shall not give THAT disrespectful being the attention it so greatly desires.
Madonna’s Introductory Speech – At first Madonna came off as very narcissistic with the life comparisons between she and Michael Jackson… As she progressed, a person could not have asked for something more sincere and REAL.
The Michael Jackson Tribute – ON POINT! The dancers were spectacular. We did notice the one dancer who had to bend at the waist instead of a full forward body lean.
Janet Jackson was absolutely amazing from the second the glass broke. Although she did falter with one of the steps she honored her brother with technical talent and pride. We will say her segment was a lot shorter than we expected…
Russell Brand as a Host – A host this year seemed very unnecessary. Be that as it may Brand was back. He was decent but this should be his last year taking on hosting duties. It isn’t his controversial comments that are off (well maybe), he just cannot entertain. He speaks so much to try to get his point across; a mouth full of empty words.
Jack Black “Satan” Prayer – This is where the opinions differ; S is a fan and C is not. Jack Black took to the stage to present with Leighton Meester… In joking Black fashion he starts to talk about praying to Satan. All you can do is shake your head and put on a smirk; different strokes for different folks…
Lady GaGa’s Performance – For a first-time performance it was very good but something about it left us wanting more. GaGa’s performance at the Much Music Video Awards had the foundation set as to what we could expect from last night but it didn’t surpass it. We expected a proper medley of songs and even with the blood stunt, that didn’t even shock us.
Green Day Performance – This new album of the group did not hit as hard as their last album so there really wasn’t any real hype behind the performance unless you were a true fan. There was a lot of energy and it was fun how Billy Joe let a multitude of audience members come up on stage. After a few seconds it did get messy.
Wale & Co. as the Houseband - Overall, even though the commercials prevented us from hearing full performances, Wale did a great job. as well as the guest performers and their covers of songs i.e. Solange’s Kings of Leon‘s “Use Somebody”, etc… It is a shame that half way through the show the audience lost interest in the band.
Twilight New Moon: Extended Trailer – NOW the epic nature of this franchise can be understood. To tell you the truth we were trying to figure out what the big hype was by just looking at the original movie and excluding the fact that it derived from a popular book series. This trailer put this movie on that sort of Harry Potter anticipation level; in our books.
Beyoncé’s Performance – Beyoncé opened with some eye-catching lasers… that rendition of “Sweet Dreams” was the business. Where can we get a studio version of that? Then all of sudden she goes into an acoustic version of “Single Ladies”. This song again? We did like how she switched up the choreography and in spite of what we just mentioned Beyoncé gives one hell of a performance as far as gyrating her body goes.
Muse’s Performance – This was the UK’s band first televised US performance. They performed at a venue very near to Radio City Music Hall. The energy was amazing; it gave us a new appreciation for their single. They also performed “Starlight” during the break which was CRAZZZY!
Lady GaGa Wins Best New Artist – Did you think anyone else had a chance of winning with all the politics involved, although she did deserve this one.
Eminem Wins for Best Hip-Hop – Umm why? We understand the VMA’s are happy Em’s back but that song/video should not have been a contender.
Serena Williams – The other public figure who lost their cool this past weekend although her situation was a bit more understandable. She came out and presented and was able to slip her incident in and make a little fun of herself.
Pink’s Performance – Incredible, Incredible, Incredible. It may not be considered the best performance of the night because it was not as loud or injected with energy to the nth degree as some of the others but the fact that she was an acrobat and singer was a knockout. She was able to sing as if she focused everything on her vocals and it had our attention 100%.
Beyoncé Returning Taylor Swift’s “Moment” - This situation has blown out of control; now people are saying the entire spectacle was staged by MTV so that Knowles could receive some good press. A statement like that reads like crap and even if it were true she won over everyone. Also, even if it was not done with the best intention just the fact she did something like that for Swift displayed how much of a “lady” she IS…. WOW o WOW it’s disgraceful how people can be so disrespectful to others who mean them no harm just to keep it “REAL” (based on the initial incident that spark the reactions).
Jay-Z’s Performance – So this man receives treatment as if he’s a president… The performance was the perfect way to close out the night and Keys did a superb job; such a talented lady, NO ONE can speak against that.
Lil Mama, where the f..r..iick up did that girl come from? That is so disrespectful when people go up on stage during a performance unless the performer invites that person on. Like what makes her think she is on any accord with either of the two artists that she can go up and flair her nostrils further… Wait that’s not our style, we apologize as she has for that little stunt she pulled.

We’ve finally come to the conclusion that NO Award show can show can surprise us anymore. Instead it takes a disrespectful person to spice the night up.

According to R&R (Radio & Records), Alicia Keys’ new single from her upcoming album will be going to Urban radio on the 30th of September. The title of the song is “Doesn’t Mean Anything“.
Excellent news! This makes it just a little over 2 years since “No One” premiered from As I Am. Another curiosity; we wonder if she will perform the song at this Sunday’s VMA‘s. She was in a closed rehearsal with Jay-Z BUT we wonder if Jay would share the spotlight and let her premiere her single. Also, will this be a buzz single because usually artists, even in Alicia’s lane of talent, release a Top 40 contending single. Lastly, if the song goes to radio expect the song to leak next week or even TODAY (a possibility).
Ever since the opportunity arose to speak about a Michael Jackson tribute mouths have been chattering non-stop. After the invalidated reports of the list of entertainers and the venue of the tribute it seems brother Jermaine Jackson is letting loose on some of the details. Jermaine Jackson has revealed who will perform at a tribute to his late brother Michael.
Mary J. Blige, Natalie Cole and Sister Sledge are among the artists that will take part in the concert, reports The AP.
Chris Brown, Akon, Angela Basset and Germany-based boyband US5 are also confirmed for the gig, which will see the entertainers cover Michael’s hits.
More names will be announced at press conferences in London and Berlin later this week.
The tribute, which will be held outside the Schoenbrunn Palace in Vienna, will be broadcast live around the world on September 26.

Can we speak about anticipation. This is an amazing beginning to the list of entertainers who will pay tribute to Jackson. Chris Brown, good ol’ Chris Brown; glad to see someone realizes that Brown has what it takes to respectfully honor the King of Pop and the event. This will definitely be another event to be tuned it with the hopes of it being televised.
If you cannot wait for September 26 then will this Sunday, the 13th, suffice? According to sources a tribute to Michael Jackson will occur at the MTV Video Music Awards and will see none other than Janet Jackson bringing back her amazing choreography to honor her brother.
Ms. Jackson is set to put on a huge MJ-honoring performance featuring 20 backup dancers — which is being put together by some of the best choreographers in the world, including Frank Gatson and Travis Payne.
According to Kryiss Grant, one of the dancers involved (who was also an usher at MJ’s burial), some rehearsals have lasted 15 hours a day.
Once Janet is finished honoring her brother, Grant tells us “there won’t be a dry eye in the house.”[SOURCE]
Another reason for us to be excited about this year’s VMA’s. We would be over the VMA’s but just the fact that it’s back in NYC sparks an interest as well as the list of performers. For sure Janet will bring the fire. Also, isn’t it amazing that it had to take an incident like this for MTV to allow Janet to perform on their stages again. Anyway this is a double whammy; she will pay tribute to her beloved brother as well as leaving every single viewer anxious for her forthcoming album.
According to Alicia Keys Daily, the songstress will join Jay-Z to perform “Empire State of Mind” at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards set to air live on September 13, 2009 from NYC. the song is taken from Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3.
How fitting, this is the return of the VMA’s to NYC and the song is basically an anthem to the city. On top of that it’s a much better performance song than “Run This Town”. I don’t think we can take another stationary performance from Rihanna a la “Live Your Life”. Plus anything Alicia is good as she has been one of the few true talents of this decade.
In related news, Beyoncé will take the stage to perform “Sweet Dreams”. This will be a surprise for all audiences as she never performed this, not even on her I Am… tour. Hopefully the magnitude of her performance is along the lines of her VMA performance from ’03 and not ’06.
Lady GaGa covers V 61, the September Issue, which hit newsstands this past Monday. The cover and editorial was shot by Mario Testino and comes in two different versions of Gaga “wearing” removable electrostatic blue and pink Marc Jacob’s glasses.
As you can see she is sporting platinum blonde hair and tan paint job. Most may tease saying she looks like a hyperbole of Donatella Versace or an Oompa Loompa but the extreme contrast between her skin and hair is eye-catching, to say the least. Plus those bright colors pop off the pages right into your eyes.

According to MTV it has been reported that after two years of hosting the VMA’s in cities other than NYC it will be headed back there for the 2009 edition. One element that will be returning this year is host Russell Brand. Many thought his jokes were too controversial; we just thought he was a bit stale. I mean there were other jokes to make other than that of the Jonas Brothers but besides that he seemed like a cool dude. To add to that Russell and Britney Spears brought in the ratings big-time so why not go back to the cash cows. So far country/pop star Taylor Swift and british trio Muse have been confirmed to perform:
Taking the stage for the first time ever at the VMAs will be country-pop superstar Taylor Swift, who will perform a brand-new version of “You Belong With Me,” a single from her Billboard-topping Fearless.
“I’m so excited that MTV and the VMAs have invited me to perform, because I think this year’s show will be unlike anything they’ve ever done!” Swift said. “I love incorporating theatrics into my performances, and the VMAs have always allowed artists to run with that. MTV has been so good to me, and I could not be more excited about this year’s VMAs!”
Joining Swift will be British rock trio Muse, making their American TV debut. The band will perform their newest single, “Uprising,” off their forthcoming album, The Resistance. The evening will also feature performances by some of today’s most in-demand artists, as well as appearances by some of the biggest names in music, television and film.
We’re so glad MTV has come to their senses and gone back to NYC because Miami, Las Vegas nor Los Angeles were big enough venues to host the event. Everything was just all over the place. On the contrary I guess you need a break to fully appreciate something because the 2006 show in NYC just had a certain something about it that the others didn’t. The VMA’s is always the best place for first time performances for new albums and singles by big artists. The show will air on September 13 at 9 p.m. ET live from Radio City Music Hall.
