In Billboard… Jill Scott Scores First #1 Debut & Katy Perry Earns Another #1 Single

It seems the fourth time is the charm as Jill Scott earns her first #1 album debut on the Billboard 200 chart. The album titled The Light Of the Sun sits atop selling 135,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan. Scott leads the pack ahead of Bon Iver whose self-titled second album shifted about 104,000 whilst the #3 spot goes to next year’s “Album Of the Year” 21 by Adele. Adele shifted another 101,000. A huge congratulations goes out to Scott for being another to top the charts with music of substance.

In Billboart Hot 100 news, the MVA (Most Valuable Artist) within the past year has to be Katy Perry. Perry just scored her fifth consecutive #1 from her Teenage Dream album for “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).” The single sold a decent 226,000 copies. What a feat Perry has pulled off with this album. In the #2 spot is the Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera “Moves Like Jagger” which shifted 213,000 copies. Still not too hot about that song. In the #3 spot is our drug, LMFAO‘s “Party Rock Anthem” featuring Lauren Bennett & GoonRock which sold 212,000 copies.

Retraction: Apologies, we have delivered you incorrect information. Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” was not the #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. The #1 single this week is Pitbull‘s “Give Me Everything” featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer. “L.F.N (T.G.I.F.)” is actually the #4 single on the charts whilst Adam Levine‘s & Christina Aguilera‘s “Moves Like Jagger” debuted at #8. LMFAO‘s “Party Rock Anthem” is still #3 on the charts. The #2 spot goes to Adele‘s “Rolling In the Deep.”

How time flies… It’s been just about a year since Katy Perry has been blowing up the Billboard Hot 100 with her Teenage Dream singles. Now, onto her fifth single, “Last Friday night (T.G.I.F.),” and next potential #1, Perry releases a very campy video to match.

Perry plays Kathy Beth Terry, the stereotype of an 80′s nerd turned hottie. The 8 minute clip recalls a crazy house party, the night before, as Terry wakes up to the messy aftermath. Kenny G, Rebecca Black, Corey Feldman and Debbie Gibson all make cameos.

It’s funny when this song was announced as a single we thought it was a brand new song as we completely forgot about it. But after listening to it a few times and seeing the video it really is one of the better songs from Teenage Dream.

2010 has definitely been a very successful year for Katy Perry. Dodging the dreaded sophomore slump, Perry ruled the Billboard Charts this year with three #1 singles: “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream” and “Firework.” It looks as though the spunky Pop singer wants that success to rollover into the new year.

An unheard of track entitled “Part of Me” recently made its way on the net. The song is rumored to be a part of a Teenage Dream re-release. It very much sounds like something that Perry would sing, almost sounding identical to a few of her other songs. Wherever it ends up, it would make a nice addition.

DJ Earworm Releases His United State of Pop 2010: Don’t Stop The Pop

This time of year is the best for partying and celebrating but as far as blogging, not so much. However, there is one thing to look forward to during this time. This would be the incredible United State of Pop mash-up by DJ Earworm, this year entitled as “Don’t Stop the Pop.” The mash-up blends the top 25 hits of the Billboard Hot 100.

This year’s mash-up includes Ke$ha‘s “Tik Tok,” Bruno Mars‘ “Just the Way You Are,” Travie McCoy‘s “Billionaire” featuring Bruno Mars, B.o.B‘s “Nothin’ On You” featuring Bruno Mars and “Airplanes” featuring Hayley Williams, Lady GaGa‘s “Bad Romance” and Telephone featuring Beyoncé, Rihanna‘s “Rude Boy,” Eminem‘s “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie” featuring “Rihanna,” Taio Cruz‘s “Break Your Heart” featuring Ludacris and “Dynamite,” Enrique Iglesias‘ “I Like It” featuring Pitbull, Katy Perry‘s “California Gurls” featuring Snoop Dogg and “Teenage Dream,” Mike Posner‘s “Cooler Than Me,” Black Eyed Peas‘ “Rock That Body” and “Imma Be,” Young Money‘s “Bedrock,” Iyaz‘s “Replay,” Lady Antebellum‘s “Need You Now,” Usher “OMG” featuring Will.i.am and “DJ Got Us Falling In Love” featuring Pitbull, Train “Hey, Soul Sister” and Jay-Z “Empire State of Mind” featuring Alicia Keys.

After two listens it’s obvious that the made-for-radio hits of 2010 focused on melodies. This isn’t Earworm’s best to date; the songs of 2010 allowed for pretty beats but they all don’t perfectly blend together. Despite that, Earworm’s 2010 effort has us reliving all the fun energy of 2010 in a little over 5 minutes.

Katy Perry Lights Up Stage At 2010 American Music Awards

Katy Perry was very ambitious last night at the 2010 American Music Awards as she reworked her current single, “Firework.” Being overly ambitious can be a setback as Perry’s performance needed many wrinkles to be ironed out.

The performance opened with a children’s choir singing the lyrics to the song and let us tell you, it was all just a mash up of sounds trying to complement each other. Things did not get much better as the children finished up; the mixing was poorly done. Some of the way through the performance eventually picked up when Perry vocals lined up with the track and her back-up dancers unleashed the hand sparklers.

Over the past few days that we were missing a handful of videos premiered from some of today’s hottest artists.

First up is the Diane Martel-directed “Right Thru Me” lifted from Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday. In the video, Minaj tones things down a great deal and is expressing her emotions to her lover, played by model Will Monfret.

Next up is Nelly’s video for the Marc Klasfeld-directed “Move That Body” featuring Akon and T-Pain. The single is lifted from 5.0. The video revolves around some urban underground setting with some sexy chicks battling it out.

Rihanna “Who’s That Chick” In HQ + ‘LOUD’ News Round-Up

It wasn’t too long before it was known that the David Guetta-produced “Who’s That Chick” would end up on the final tracklist for LOUD. Well the days are counting down which means it’s only a short matter of time before more and more of the tracks leak. Today, a higher quality version of the album track is here.

In other LOUD news, Rihanna and Katy Perry are trying to get into the studio together to record for this album or for Perry’s re-release of Teenage Dream. There was also a listening party for LOUD in London and either the bloggers were persuaded or the album is really that good because the reviews are nothing but praise.

Rihanna also went on about how she lets her b/f, Matt Kemp, listen to her music and they do disagree sometimes. This song, “Who’s That Chick,” is a perfect example as Kemp thinks it doesn’t fit the album.

The image above has been floating around and is said to be taken when Lady GaGa went up on stage to accept her award for Video of the Year at this past Sunday’s 2010 MTV VMA‘s. Oh wow, do you see the facial expressions of Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Jayden. Rihanna seems to be the only well-known face in that pic to be pleasant.

‘Teenage Dream’: Katy Perry’s Single Success Did Not Translate Into Album Sales

It was proven that not everyone can have their cake and eat it too when this week’s Billboard 200 chart was released. At #1 was Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream which was expected after the major success of her singles, “California Girls,” “Teenage Dream,” and the promo circus that was put together by her label. What wasn’t expected was although Perry was #1, her sales’ numbers were lacking. Teenage Dream sold about 192,000 copies which is not horrible by today’s music industry standards but is far off from earlier predictions. Early predictions had Perry estimated to sell near Gold numbers: near 400,000.

In a recent MTV article, the spotlight is put on Perry’s latest album as being more of a greatest hits collection than a “cohesive” list of songs. [READ HERE] Which makes sense as it seems people nowadays like their music uptempo and short as possible. So it’s almost as if the record labels know they won’t make the money with album sales so they say, “it’s all about the singles.”

There’s no sense in fighting the change; the days of each of your albums going Diamond with 2-5 #1 singles are over. Mariah Carey was the last to do accomplish that feat. Even Britney Spears who sold a ton of albums still only achieved her second #1 single about 10 years into her career and we still think that had to do with politics. In a similar situation, Alicia Keys couldn’t get a single to chart properly to save her life off the The Element of Freedom but that album surely went on to sell near-Gold figures in its first week alone and became Platinum soon after. On the contrary, Rihanna has hits upon hits especially only being around for five years yet her albums sales are nothing to boast about. Eminem is the only one out right now who can top both the singles’ and album charts along with Lady GaGa of the new decade of Pop Stars.

So as it stands the current crop of Pop stars are catering to listeners who appreciate a “fun” single instead of a “solid” album. But what will work for Perry is she has so many singles on Teenage Dream that they will keep the listeners’ attention and cause the album to stay in the charts for a long while.

Mainstream’s current lover, Katy Perry, is exactly one week away from releasing her sophomore studio album, Teenage Dream. With her first single, “California Gurls,” sitting pretty at #4 on the Hot 100 and her second, “Teenage Dream,” cracking the top 10 at #9, this new album of hers is looking to be a huge top seller. Today, the last promo track from iTunes is here, this one is entitled “E.T.”

“E.T.” was one of the first demos to leak from this album and after a little polishing it definitely beams. The song has a rock-stadium chanting vibe: vaguely similar to the classic “We Will Rock You” except much more Pop. With all this success Perry is experiencing thus far, she may be able to stretch this album for about 1.5 to 2 years and release this as a single.
