A rare occurrence in the present music industry has taken place today. Taylor Swift’s third studio album, Speak Now, sold 1,000,000 plus copies in its first week pushing her to platinum status already. Say what now? That’s right, in an industry where an album can be certified #1 by selling 200,000 copies, Taylor Swift has accomplished a major feat.
Swift moved 1,046,718 copies, to be exact. The second closest opening week to this hasn’t happened since 2005 when 50 Cent released Massacre with 1.14 million copies. Of course there was Lil Wayne‘s Tha Carter III which sold 1.005 million back in June of 2008.
Keeping it within the genre of Country music, Swift now has the second highest debut for a country album. She is behind Garth Brooks whose album, Double Live, debuted with 1.085 million copies. However, Swift now has the highest album debut for a female Country artist. Previously, it was held by Shania Twain‘s 2002 album, Up. [SOURCE]
Congratulations Ms. Swift, we did not think it was possible anymore. We’re sure your family over at Big Machine/ Universal Republic are wetting themselves with excitement. The only other artist we can see coming near this total in the near future is Lady GaGa, for her third album’s release.
