IWFW: Theodore Elyett by Theodore Sealy

With Islands of the Word Fashion Week making its return this November here, in The Bahamas, we’re back on the fashion tip. This past weekend the kick-off to fashion week began and here with a special contribution is Dash giving a review of Theodore Elyett by Theodore Sealy.

The producers of Islands of The World Fashion Week hosted this past Sunday, The Runway to Fashion Week. The show was a Project Runway styled showcase, in which five (5) local designers vied for a coveted spot in this years IWFW event. The winning designer would also be afforded the Harl Taylor Scholarship to attend an intensive summer program at Parsons (The New School of Design in New York.) The night began in quiet anticipation but as the evening’s festivities shaped up, a clear front runner emerged with a boldly luxurious design aesthetic that was masterfully executed. Crafted from silk chiffons, ornate hand-beaded trims and printed silks, this collection shimmered and shined above the rest.

It was no surprise that Theodore Elyett by Theodore Sealy ultimately captured the night’s top honor. The collection represented a cross cultural point of view that was vibrant, ethnic, chic & elegant. Theodore Sealy has probably been best known as the creative director behind the Miss Teen Bahamas Organization. It became evident that his existing commitment to beauty has parlayed itself into his remarkable design sensibility that not only flattered the female form but strived to make pieces that were fashion forward. In speaking to the designer backstage he indicated that the muse for his collection was singer/fashionista Solange Knowles; and it showed!

With the first phase of competition secured, Mr. Sealy is now faced with the task of expanding his current ideas into a cohesive ten (10) piece collection to show at IWFW this November. Before ending our brief conversation, Theodore made it a point to mention his desire to further his studies, ultimately attaining his Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design. He also expressed his appreciation to God, his family and friends for their continued support.

If he is able to maintain the vibrancy of the few pieces shown thus far, I have no doubt that his goal would not be far from his grasp.
