After a multiple year hiatus the VH1 Divas special has returned. The six ladies who received the honor of being classified a “diva”; Jennifer Hudson, Adele, Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks and Miley Cyrus all took the stage to treat the audience with beautiful solo and duet performances. For now we only have the solo performances sans Miley Cyrus. Sadly, Yardie must share the same opinion of most people. That opinion of wondering why in the world Cyrus was chosen as a diva.
From the solo performances it’s clear that these women have the talent and star quality to be a diva. They all were great but Adele edged out the other 5 just a bit. How ironic, that the first song we heard from her is the song she chose to sing last night. Everything was so effortless as if she was breathing those stunning vocals.
Jennifer Hudson is just a no-brainer; she just comes across as this generations Aretha Franklin with all that church soul and sass. Leona Lewis gave a great performance of a song that is so boring she managed to keep the energy alive. Also, that note she hits three quarters of the way through is the highlight of the entire thing. Kelly Clarkson knocked it out of the park with the acoustic version of “Already Gone”. Just taking away the Tedder instrumentation made it a whole different song. The only one besides Miley Cyrus, who we have yet to see, that did not have a great performance was Jordin Sparks. She was pop singer Jordin Sparks last night and not “sanger” Jordin Sparks.
Overall very good, the talent turned out to be more impressive than originally thought.
